About Garry Davis

My beginning

My family had a background in stockbroking which is where the interest started and it built from there to become my most passionate pursuit. It is a way of life because it encompasses all the fascinating events and societal trends around the world. We live in the most stimulating of times so I can’t wait to jump into it every morning.

I started trading just before the crash of 1987 with absolutely no knowledge of how the market worked, and was taught a very expensive lesson, losing more than half of my trading capital in just a few days.

I spent the next 5 to 10 years educating myself via a series of somewhat painful experiences where I would make some money and then give it all back plus a bit. Can you relate?

Most traders give up after a period of this sort of punishment, but my growing passion for the market kept me in there. Eventually, after probably 10 years of tough lessons, and a career opening doors that still hold me in great stead today, I started to develop an understanding of how markets really worked and why it was so necessary to approach things differently and stand aside from the masses.

A career defining career

Following the attainment of an Honours Science Degree at UNSW, I was fortunate enough to be elevated to work in a semi-consulting role that encompassed almost every major industry sector in Australia. This rare opportunity meant that I had first-hand exposure to how these industries worked and actually made money.

That background has proven to be enormously valuable in the fundamental research part of what I do. It is vital to be able to put research results into relevant context and unless you have worked in an industry it is much harder to do that.

After a managing role in a recruitment agency gave me an even greater insight into the nuts and bolts of successful businesses, I discovered what I really wanted to do…

Specialist Share Education

Learning to be a successful trader and investor takes a lot of time unless you have a mentor to show you a smarter way. I didn’t have the benefit of a mentor so my journey to consistent success was far longer than it needed to be.

The ultimate goal is reaching a level of quiet confidence that the methods you use will produce good results over the longer-term. There are many ups and downs of course but it’s how one responds to those with a cool head that matters. I love the game but also gain great satisfaction from mentoring my aspiring client base.

It is extremely rewarding to work with a member and help move them up the scale of knowledge and consistency and hear directly from them how it has impacted their lives.

  • The most important lessons learned are that of simplicity of plan and staying current. These are absolutely mandatory
  • Conventional thinking is the worst guide on the planet
  • Discipline can be learned but there are no free lunches
  • There is a reason why the most successful people in any pursuit have mentors or willingly pay for the information they need

My qualifications

I hold a Bsc (hons) in Industrial Chemistry from the Uni of NSW and have broad experience across the majority of Australia’s major industries in operational and management roles which provides me with unique knowledge about how varying industries work. Since commencing full-time in financial markets in 2000, I have gained the following qualifications;

  • ASX accredited derivatives advisor in 2005 from Tribeca
  • SDIA accreditation in 2005 from Deakin University
  • Diploma of Financial Planning (FNS50611) in 2014 to provide advice in Superannuation
